Good evening Shortie. I just looked at the pics Jason posted for you and they are incredible. I sent the sunrise/soldier pic to channel 10 and Loren Nancarrow responded back to me that he was going to show it on the News. I’ve not seen the news for a couple of days so I don’t know if he used it yet.
Just keep up your spirits and great work - we are with you all the way!
Love you -

Hey Knucklehead,
So I gather you’re bored much of the time (considering the gazillion times you’ve mentioned it). Well don’t let that dull the senses. You get sloppy when you’re bored. Next thing you know you’ll be sitting there “in the zone” and a scorpion will crawl up into your shorts and remind you what you SHOULD have been doing! WATCHING FOR SCORPIONS!!
I can’t imagine anyone smiling in 145 degree weather. Oh yeah, I know, it’s cooled down to a mild 105 degrees. It would still spread me out like butter in a hot skillet. How do you beat it? Chew ice? If so I could try and send you some dry ice. I’m not sure how it would affect your sinuses though. Maybe I better research it on Google before I ship.
Those two adorable puppies you give me such a hard time about are still amazing. Everyday I enjoy them more and more. Maybe I’ll try to make a video of them and send it to you, but you’ll have to beg me. I like it when you beg.
What’s it going to take for us to end that war over there? When you find out, let us know, ok? We’re kind of in the dark here. Would love to hear your soldier’s perspective on how much good we’re doing over there. Too many people that aren’t there yapping about it back here and I need a shot of reality from someone who really knows.
Regardless, get the job done and haul your ass back here. I don’t care if it’s in a sling as long as it’s still connected.
I hear you’re quite something now. Come home and show me.
Love ya (but don’t get used to it),
Kim
If you’re REALLY nice I might send you some pictures of my girlfriends naked. They’re a little old, but you’re desparate, so it all washes out.

Dear Shorty,
I talked to your dad yesterday (Saturday morning -October 14th-) and he gave me your website to write to you. I wrote this once and it erased everything because you know your aunt, not to swift where computers are concerned, so will try again and then I’ll go to the e-mail and see what happens. Just thought I’d let you know everyone here is good and Gramps is doing to good he’s still driving and going to breakfast every morning. The only thing is he’s given up his girlfriends now because he thinks they’re too much bother. Not bad for being 95, is it. We all went to Waterloo today (Jack, Lori, girls, and Gramps) for Uncle Jerry’s birthday and his choice was Fizzoli’s for spaghetti. Easy to please, isn’t he. Then we had to hit Toys R Us for the girls. Will keep this short because I have a tendency to ramble forever, but we just wanted you to know we think of you a LOT and we love you and are so proud of you. Keep up the good work of sleeping and going to the gym because with those two things you should stay safe. Come home real soon.
Love and miss you,
Uncle Jerry and Aunt Diana

Shorty,
My thoughts are with you….sorry to hear about your dear friend. What you said in your last message is something we all could use a refresher course in…being happy is very important or being the best you can be to yourself and others around you…I think it’s something people easily take for granite. Sometimes people’s greatest epiphanies come through extreme events, which can be difficult, and life altering. It makes me very happy that you have pulled a very positive outlook on life from this experience. You are a wonderful young man and good person. Stay focused and strong.
Love you. k
October 27th, 2006 at 10:19 am
Stay up G.
on the worrier’s path issues in life are not looked at as the good being blessings and the the bad meanning that you have been damb.
Issues that come up are to be looked at as challenges you must over come and the out come makes up who you are.
(your a good, honorable and crazy vato)
Do what you got to do and handle your business.
San Diego and the family will be here when your done.
I look up to you my young friend.

Hey cuz.
I’m gonna say one thing first and it’s that I love you. You are saving my ass over there and I thank you so much. Here’s the second thing: buck up. Keep your chin high, don’t get caught with your pants down, watch your back. Third thing: when you’re down, think of how my cat Mac chased the neighbor’s cat into the swimming pool and she had to swim to the other side to get away. Yeah, haha stupid cat. Who cares? But, hey, that’s a great thing to think about when ya got bullets whizzing by. We all miss you so much. Your fat ass, soon to be not-so-fat, is making history over there bud, so make sure you document everything. Pictures (I know you’ve taken lots, but keep snapping), journals, whatever. And, hey, how’s your tan coming along? lol. Anyways, my mom says hi and she wishes you well and says to keep safe and shoot those gun-bearing Iraqis. Watch your back(side), always cause you don’t want someone to shoot you in the behind and have a hole in your buttcheek, then have to sit on a donut in a tent to take the pressure off, while everyone’s out there having all the fun. Anyways, just thought I’d stop in and check out the site. Talked to my dad an hour ago and he said to check it out again, so here I am. I love you cuz. Can’t wait to see you for Thanksgiving, as long as you can run fast enough to get to the runway.
Love,
Sam

We are patiently waiting your return home, hopefully in the next couple of weeks. Until then, keep your spirits up, stay alert and most of all - be safe.

Shortie-While you gave all of us here in Illinois (Vanessa and JJ’s new home by Ophalon, IL as JJ works at Scott AFB and Vanessa in St. Louis) the best Thanksgiving Gift ever. Just hearing your voice from home with your folks gave us all alot to be thankful for this year. As I mentioned in your Xmas card I am short for words, and as one soldier to another I know you can understand why. For your folks it must trully be a Great Thanksgiving and a time to catch up on many things in your life. We all miss you Shortie and look forward to the day when you job is done and you are home for good. Please know how much we all love you kiddo (Don Vito as well) and wish you didn’t have to go back. But like any job someone has to do it and we’ve sent our best to do this one. Keep your wits about you, your head down and watch your backside all the time Shortie. Give them hell over there and bring your men/women home safely. All the best of Holiday Wishes Shortie and wish as always that I could be there with you. God Bless You and Continue to Look After You Always. Love Uncle Butch/Aunt Liz/Cousin Beck/Chris, JJ and Vanessa. PS We will be back in Las Vegas after 9pm tomorrow (Sunday Evening).

Hey cuz.
Well, it was really great seeing you. I didn’t realize how much I had missed you until I saw you. You are a changed person, that’s for sure. you’ve grown up in every aspect and you are wiser than many of us in some respects. At the airport when you left, it made me very proud to see you all dressed in your Army best. I kinda started crying when I saw you. You looked like you didn’t belong in any other clothing. That was the longest hug you and I have ever had, and I immediately broke down. I just wish that I had told you I love you. I actually had a dream that night that we were at the airport and I told you. That’s how much I wish I had. You make me so proud to say that you are my cousin. You know, I had never seen your dad cry before until then! I wish you didn’t have to go back, but you wanted to, so that makes me respect you so much more. I want to get dog tags that have what yours say, so I can wear them and say “that’s my cousin”. Be safe, poopy-face cuz. I love you and I miss you. Come home safely.
Love,
Sam

Dear Shorty: It was wonderful seeing you but wish it could have been longer. It was very difficult to watch you leave Sunday morning. I’m exercising and working on my six-pack. Shortie-Hope you had as good a New Years as possible given your circumstances. Don’t have to tell you that we all missed you this Holiday Season but know that next year we will have you back with all of us. Liz had to work so we stayed home this season. Conversed with your dad dayly on all that is going on in San Diego. His new expansion of the store sounds absolutely incredible, but then he does everything first class. Understand you are E-4 hardstripe (Would be corporal) in my day is it still the same now? I’m so proud of the job you have been doing Shortie. Even though at times I know it has been rough and difficult to understand it is the most important job in the world. Keeping us (Your family) safe could never be more important than it is nowadays. With some luck and continued hard work you will be E5 in know time. Hope the boxes are reaching you and the men. If anything special you need let your dad know and we will get it shortie if at all possible. Trust you fellow troops had a good Holiday Season and We All Extend our Prayers to you and the families of your Fallen comrades. God will look after them Shortie and they will be in a better place now. Meanwhile keep your wits about you, weapons cleaned and know that we are all praying each day for the safe return of you and your fellow soldiers. God Bless You and Look Over You Always Greggory. Hey cuz. Just checking in to say hi and I miss you. I don’t know if I told you, but my teacher has a nephew in the Army, so she had all of her English students write letters to the men in his company. I just got a letter back from the person who got my letter. He’s a sergeant in the 1st ID now, but he was with the 82nd for 4 1/2 years before coming to the 1st in April ‘06. He’s a truck commander now. Anyways, I just thought it was cool that I got a letter back and I thought you’d think so, too, because you’ve probably got buddies who don’t have any correspondence like you do. So yeah. Well, I hope your New Year’s went okay. Your dad is keeping me relatively up-to-date about how you’re doing and what’s going on, so… Well, anyways, keep safe. I think of you everyday and I hope for a safe return for you and your buddies. I love you.
Love,

Well Shortie can you believe ole Don Vitto sent a box back to himself, brain damage you know. (Your dad said it gave you a good laugh, which is important considering where you are at. Chris set up my email address as Donvitto02@aol.com since he thought you would get a kick out of it. You have a tremendous support group back here Shortie, alot of folks love and miss you and I would imagine a great many angels look over you as well. Your dad says you are looking buff now (In my day that is what we called a good shoe shine (buffed). But that is good, keeping in shape and keeping your mind busy is the best thing you can do while you are away. Also, let the folks above you know that you have earned some recognition (Rank, etc). In the Military regardless of branch you have to go after what you want Shortie. There are few smarter than you and your men trust and love you. That is the hardest thing a soldier can earn is the respect of his fellow soldiers. They know when the S… hits the fan you will bring them through and home as safely as possible. I know you hurt at times deeply for those that God has taken, but there is always a reason and we do not always understand that reason Shortie. But you must pray for them then move on to the next job at hand. Stay focused always, never drop your guard for an instant 24/7. Remember you joined the the toughest of the tough when you joined the 82nd Airborne Division. Like your folks your are strong of will and committment. We all sleep better knowing the best of the best are keeping the bad guys away. So we will keep praying for your safety and that of your men, keep sending you whatever you need to do whatever you must to keep you and your fellow troops morale up and in your case your store well stock (Rumor has it you have a regular store practically complete with knives). Meanwhile you keep your mind focused on the important mission at hand, keep your sense of humor even in the worst of times and come home with you and your men safely when your time is up. Love ya kiddo, Hell of a fine Job you all doing. Uncle Butchie, Aunt Liz, Cous Becky, JJ & Vanessa and Chris. Salute

Hey cuz.
I haven’t written you any messages in a while, so I decided to tonight. I was at the bike shop last week and your dad showed me some new pics of you in your makeshift house. Getting tougher, I hear. It’s just amazing to me to see how you’ve gone from a skinny, gangly kid to a strong and grown man that I am proud to say is my cousin. You have no idea how noble you truly are. As a matter of fact, I have pictures of you on my binder so that I am reminded every single day of the sacrifices you and your brothers make for people back home. I think of you everyday, and everyday, I am more proud of you. We all miss you back home. Michael is finally learning to fight back when he gets wailed on. He can actually throw back some words, though they’re pretty weak. We’re just waiting for you to get back to help us mess with him more. Well, I’ve got to go finish homework. Unfortunately, time doesn’t stop when you want it to. Oh yeah, and I’m in the play Once Upon a Mattress, which is the Princess and the Pea. I don’t have an actual part, but I dance and sing and make a fool of myself, just like I usually do. Everybody is probably going to come, but I really wish that you were. Anyways, keep it safe, watch those bullets going by your butt, all that crap. I love you.
Love,
Sam

Shortie-Getting a box ready to go out, Don Vitto says you need a light sabre but damned if it will fit in these small boxes. Swords are too long and heavy also. Guess will have to settle for some of the usual and some suprises to help get you through the lonely nights (Not that you are lonely by any means). What with sand fleas that eat cockroaches and other nasty things. I hear the cuisine (Fancy word for food) is absolutely to your liking there. Don Vitto’s says when you come home he will buy you the best steak and lobster we can find together. You can bring along your dad and brother as well and mom to unless you just want it to be a guy thing. Miss the H… out of you everyday, but am sure your dad tells you that for me. We all miss you Shortie, but each day is another day gone and closer to home coming. It’s the toughest job in the world what you are doing and I can say that first hand. Okay only trained the guys to go fight the V war, and only Bird???? and Fools jump from planes and I didn’t qualify for either of them so guess that is why you are there in my place now. Very few people in this world can do what you do Shortie (Your men/women included). I know the chow is not the best but at least it no longer comes from a can dated 1943 and you’re eating it in 1974. The water is bottled now so hope the rubber taste is at least gone. (Never could get that taste out of our mouths once we had it) . How goes the quest for your rank you’ve earned? Kick some B… and go get what you believe is yours Shortie. Get all you can while you are over there. Make it all count for something and know that we are all behind you and your fellow soldiers a 150% here. Just watch your rear end and let your dad know what you need and we will all work on getting it too you Shortie. Wish I had your B…’s, they’re big ones to do what you must. But keep up the Great Job, bring your men home safely and one day you can show your dad how Don Vitto would drive that lawn mower around the yard. Chin up Shortie, you’re the Best we have and want you back this fall in one piece and smiling. God Bless You and Look After your scrawny ass till we see you home. Uncle Butchie, Aunt Liz, Becky, Chris , JJ & Vanessa. Love ya kiddo, stay tough.

FIRST I WOULD LIKE TO SAY I CHERISH THE FRIENDSHIP I GOT WITH MY FRIEND SHORTY. FOR ANYONE ELSE THATS READING THIS, ANYONE THAT DOESNT ALREADY KNOW, SHORTY IS A MUCH BETTER MAN THEN ME. HES BRAVER AND HIS NUTS ARE 10 TIMES BIGGER THEN MINE. SHORTY IS OUT PUTTING HIS LIFE ON THE LINE EVERY SINGLE DAY FOR A COUNTRY FULL OF PEOPLE THAT WILL NEVER KNOW HIM. BUT BETTER YET HES FIGHTING FOR THE FREEDOM OF THE PEOPLE HE KNOWS AND LOVES LIKE YOU AND ME.
GREG, SORRY HOMIE I HAVENT SHOWN YOU THE SUPPORT I SHOULD BE GIVING YOU FOR WHAT YOURE DOING FOR US. YOU GOTTA ALREADY KNOW I HAVE MORE RESPECT FOR YOU THEN MOST PEOPLE, NOT FOR WHAT YOURE DOING NOW, BUT BECAUSE I HAVE HAD THE PLEASURE OF GETTING TO KNOW YOU, AND I KNOW WHAT A GOOD PERSON YOU ARE. JUST CAUSE I HAVENT WRITTEN YOU DOESNT MEAN I DONT THINK ABOUT YOU AND PRAY FOR YOU. I HAVENT HEARD FROM YOU FOR A COUPLE WEEKS NOW, AND I HOPE EVERYTHHING IS GOING REAL GOOD FOR YOU, OR AT LEAST AS GOOD AS IT CAN GET FOR WHERE YOU ARE. I LOVE YOU, BROTHER, AND I CANT WAIT TO SEE YOU AND TO GIVE MY HOMIE A HUG. YOU BETTER MAKE IT HOME SOON SO WE CAN GET INTO SOME MORE TROUBLE.
I JUST WANT TO SAY HI TO YOUR PARENTS TOO, WHILE I HAVE THE CHANCE CAUSE I KNOW THEY WILL PROBABLY READ THIS EVENTUALLY. I MISS YOU SHORTY, IM SAYIN A PRAYER FOR YOU RIGHT NOW AND IF GOD ANSWERS MY PRAYER, YOU WILL HAVE A COUPLE HOOKERS AND A BOX OF PATRON APEARING NEXT TO YOU RIGHT NOW, BUT MY CREDIT WITH THE MAN UPSTAIRS ISNT SO GOOD, SO I WILL PROBABLY HAVE TO SEND IT TO YOU INSTEAD OF HIM. I HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU SOON, BUD.
LOVE YOU HOMIE ! -RILEY
STAY DOWN, BUT KEEP YOUR CHIN UP.

Shortie-Congratulations on making the promotion to Specialist E-4. Hell of an accomplishment for only 2 1/2 yrs in service and in the toughest unit the Army has non the less. You’ve come light years in a short time kiddo and (Don Vitto) is shedding a few tears of joy over all you’ve become. You’re entire family is incredibly proud of you Shortie and wish we could at times support you more. But you have grabbed the hearts of many as have your fellow soldiers and we will all continue to do what we can to support you in anyway we can. You let us know if we overlook anything and you know us, we will get it if possible. Liz is doing great. JJ & Vanessa As well in their new home and Nesser enjoys emailing you. Becky, well she is Becky as you know but sends her love and misses your calls. Chris helps me with filling the boxes we ship out so you have some creature comforts and some items to help keep you safe. He is like a son to me and I keep informed of all you are doing. Your dad and I talk almost daily, okay Don Vitto somtimes many times daily. He and your mom are so proud of you. They work like crazy as always and can’t wait till you return home with the troops so we Can all Get together. We all say alot of prayers for you and your fellow soldiers each night shortie and I know that you are giving it 150% over there. Keep that stubborn head of yours down, watch your skinny behind and trust know one. Looking forward to you coming home this fall kiddo. Love Uncle Butchie, Aunt Liz, Becky, JJ & Vanessa and Chris. Dearest Gregory,
Thank you for your dedication to Rebecca. As hard as it has been for me to deal with her loss, it is also so difficult for me that you are there in peril. I am so proud of your courage and dedication to our cause and defending our way of life. I am so grateful for all of those before you, and those who will come after you. Compassionalte for the families of the fallen or injured, with whom the pain may never heal. Revoicing for the families of those who return, hoping that their lives go on enriched and blessed. I have asked for Rebecca to be an Angel over her brother and sisters and all of the children of the world. She adored you so much Gregory, that I am sure she is watching over you too. I love you and await the day for you to come home. Keep safe.
Lovingly,
Your Auntie Janna

Hey chunk. Just checking in. I really like the message you wrote the other day, dedicating the month to Becca. I tried to get airfare up to Oregon to spend time up there with everybody, but it was too expensive. I talked to Sara, though. She says they’re doing okay. Well, “fine” is what she said. Apparently, she got a job at McDonald’s and her volleyball team isn’t winning much, but hey, at least they’re not the worst team. Umm…. what else do I wanna say…? I’m spending this first week of Easter vacation at Feffy’s house. I get to spend some quality time with Noni, which usually ends up with her and me at Norstrom’s in the shoe department and (at least) five boxes of shoes. Went to the hot rod show in Del Mar. There were some damn hot cars there. We saw this one that I forget what your dad and brother called, but I could feel the engine in my chest. He drove it around the middle (like two miles) a few times, and it was pretty awesome. The engine was maybe 3 inches shorter than your dad, it was that tall. We also saw a few GTOs and a couple Challengers. Lots of Bel Airs, some Chip Foose cars, some Coddingtons, a couple Woodys, and we saw Vince, the Wax On/Wax Off guy who was around the corner on Beagle. Anyways, I took about 200 pictures, so if you want to see them, I’ll get them over to your brother. Some of the cars had these really intricate paint jobs on the windows and on the inside of the hood, so when I took a picture, the paint lit up like a light. One dark car had really ghost-y paint, so the picture looked haunted. I’ll make sure I send that one to Jason. You’ll love it. Well, my dad wants to post a message, so I’ll finish up. Anyways, I love you cuz. Keep it safe. We’re pulling for you.
April 1st, 2007 at 5:58 pm
Hey Greg
Sorry I havent sent any messages lately. We cant wait for you to come home and hang out. I get info from your dad on how you are doing. I saw a show on tv about a bigass truck that is in production that can take a hit from a shoulder rocket and do very little damage and not hurt anyone inside. I dont remember what it is called but hopefully you will be in one of those things to ride in instead of the hummers. Thanks for keeping us safe over here and keep yourself safe. See you soon. Uncle

Happy Easter Shortie:
The kids colored Easter eggs and Jamison and Kaila hunted for them. They had a lot of fun, but we sure did miss you. The desert was great this weekend. Lots of sun, a little wind and lots of relaxation.
I loved hearing from you today, such a nice treat for me.
Keep up the great work, stay strong and safe.
I love you very much and miss you too.

Hey cuz. I was just thinking about you. I’m up finishing Spring Break homework. (ya. can you believe they decided to ruin my break?!) Anyways, I was just thinking about you. I’m glad your mom heard from you; that means you’re doing alright. Sooo….. Jenna has a boyfriend. His name is Marc and he’s fourteen. Jenna wanted to go to the movies with him, but your brother says they can only go to the movies if Marc can beat him at arm-wrestling… hmmmm….. And then he said they can only go if Marc can outrun Rika (like that would happen!). Then he said Marc would have to outrun Rika with a piece of carne asada strapped to the back of his pants….. Now THAT sounds funny. I’m going to the Wild Animal Park tomorrow with my mom and my friend Nicola. She’s from England and never been there before! In fact, shes really only been in the country for 4 months….. I think she’ll really enjoy it. Well, I should go to bed soon. I’m getting up early to pick her up at 8 and try to get to Escondido around opening which is at 9. So, I’ll check in soon. Love ya!

I have had a back piece started this week. By the time you get back it will be pretty close to being done. It’s pretty sick. I talked to yor mom and bro the other day. They sound great! My parents send their love. Well man this really isn’t my thing so I hope to see ya soon.

April 30th, 2007 at 2:29 pm
Hey Shortie, you didn’t think ole brain damaged Uncle Butchie would forget your 22nd B Day did you? Okay, so I missed by one day. But now you are 22, should definitely feel older and wiser by now. Don Vitto says Happy Birthday as well (He missed by a day as well). We did get a box off to you and it should be arriving any day now for you. Never know what surprises await you shortie. Trust you are well and send our prayers for those members of the 82nd lost this past month and the families left behind. I know it has been rough on you and your men. But I also know that you will keep your witts about you always and look over those around you. Wish I could say more on this subject but sometimes words seem to escape us that could describe the losses. Just know our prayers are always with our fallen comrades. Weather is hottest on record here and less than 1/2 inch of rain this year thus far. Damn is down nearly 100 ft of water (Very Bad) yet they build. Family is doing well and all send their very best of Birthday Wishes and wishes for your safe return. Hope you enjoy the box and not to worry, no knives or carabiners in this one (I don’t think). Keep working out kiddo, get all the experience you can under your belt over there and give them Hell for us all. Watch your backside and trust no one, most importantly get your B… and that of your troops home in one piece this fall. Miss you kiddo, Love Uncle Butchie (Don Vitto), Aunt Liz and family. Chris and Kitties too. God Bless You and Look Over You. Salute

Hey.
I know I’m extremely late in saying this, but Happy 22nd. You’re gettin’ pretty old! Haha. Well, I just finished my AP World History final today, which was pretty horrible. I am totally serious when I say that it almost killed me. It was pretty nasty. On Thursday, AP World is taking the AP Exam, except I’m one of the very few not taking it just because I really didn’t want to. I don’t know if anyone has told you, but my mom and I moved from Alpine to El Cajon. Yeah, we’ve been moving since the end of April; I think about 3 weeks. It’s been pretty hard, but I really like our new place. It’s a condo in the industrial part of E.C. over off of W. Main. We’ve still got boxes in the living room that need to be unpacked and books that we don’t want. Oh yeah! Do you think any of your buddies would want to read some James Patterson, Michael Connelly (police mysteries), Robin Cook (medical drama), or Piers Anthony (fantasy/sci-fi)? Just let your mom or dad know so they can tell me, and if you want the books, I’ll mail the box(es) over and send you an email so you know when to start looking for mail. So anyways. I think of you and your men often and I still pray, even though I’m not religious. I guess you could say it’s more like putting positive energy into the world for you. Well Mister SPC Millard, congrats on your promotion (Noni proudly showed me the newsletter

Shortie - I am so sorry I couldn’t be there to protect you more. You’ve left this world a better place for having enriched everyone you touched with your courage and your humor. There wasn’t a person that met you that didn’t grow to love and respect you. We will all miss you so badly Shortie but I know you are with Mom (Grandma) and together you can look over all of us. Your folks and brother, I don’t have to tell you or others reading this are the best and are tough. There is not always an answer for why God in his Great Wisdom calls home some of our children early, but I know he must have a good one for needing you Shortie. All of us will do our best to tell future generations of your great deeds, heroism and love of life and others. Today a New Angel is born, thank you for defending us all and enriching our lives in your short time with us. God Bless You Shortie and Look After you, your folks and Jason. I will miss you deeply everyday as will (Donvitto). Thank You Kiddo from a Grateful Nation - Uncle Butchie, Aunt Liz, Becky, Vanessa, JJ and Chris.

Happened to read a DOD article and saw the news of your death. I cannot put into words the shock I felt seeing your name among those brave young men killed this past weekend. And of course the saddness. Although we only spent a short time with you at your graduation from Ft. Benning with our son Josh, you left quite an impression. Your smile was infectious and your sense of humor unmatched by most. We prayed for your safety and God’s strength since your deployment, jsut as we now are praying for Josh’s and the young men he is serving with in Baghdad as part of a Stryker Brigade out of Ft. Lewis. We told Josh last night about Shortie. He is as saddened and as devastated by Greg’s death as we are. He wants so desperately to come home, to be there for the memorial next week, but he can’t. His thoughts and prayers are with you all. Jordan, our daughter, told Josh that he has gained an angel to watch over him.
Kevin and Jill….we cannot imagine what you are going through right now. God has strange plans for our children that we can’t comprehend. While I don’t have any idea why God decided to take Shortie at such a young age, I am sure that he is in heaven watching over you, your familiy, and the other brave soldiers he left behind, including Josh. And more than that, I know he is making the angels laugh.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family…..

Dear Gregory (and Family):
Although you do not know me, I remember meeting you when you were little. Your Mom and you kids were in Mervyn’s and we chatted for awhile. I didn’t even know you were in Iraq; your Mom and I don’t have the opportunity to talk much at work anymore. But when I heard about what happened, my heart was very heavy and sad for your close friends and family. My tears fell for you; and for your Mom and Dad and brother. How brave you were and how proud you have made your family! I don’t understand why God has taken you to be with Him but He must really need your spirit and kind soul. Please accept a grateful thank you for paying the ultimate price for keeping me and mine safe. I will always remember you, Shortie, your sweet, beautiful face, and for what you did for our country.
May 30th, 2007 at 2:26 pm
Shortie - I have thought of you a great deal since the 26th. Shed more tears than I felt a person could. As a Veteran I Salute you for having the Courage to Sacrifice it all so America can remain Free. Today I found a phrase that trully sums it all up. Jesus Died for our soul and You Died for Our Freedom. Religion is not my strongest point, but I would like to believe that you are up there or out there somewhere watching over us all. We all miss you Shortie, some more than others, some a Great Deal. My heart trully aches at our loss. But where ever God has chosen to keep you Shortie, know that your family and I will do all we can to never let the world forget you. Love you Kiddo - Uncle Butchie 5/30/2007
“THE FINAL ROLL CALL”
We thought of you with love today
But that is nothing new.
We thought about you yesterday
And days before that too.
We think of you in silence
We often speak your name.
Now all we have are memories
And your picture in a frame.
Your memory is our keepsake
With which we’ll never part
God has you in His keeping
We have you in our Heart.

I was told the sad news of your family member at CPMA today, where his cousin goes to school. I am so very saddened for you all. Please accept my condolences from a total stranger.
Thank you for fighting the fight.
Shortie must have been really special, as I see he was a wrestler. My son also wrestled at Pt. Loma HS. They’re the best kids in the world.

I felt like I was punched in the gut when I read this morning’s paper. It’s 3AM and I still can’t find the right words to express my sympathy to all of Shorty’s family. Leslie and I are praying for you and we want you to know that we are thankful for all the men and women who take on the tough jobs and sacrifice their comfort and safety for the rest of us. We are heartbroken that you had to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Dear Gregory “Shortie” and family,
You are in our thoughts and prayers. I just want to thank you for giving us the life that we have,,,,it is because brave men and women like you that we can live as we do. You will never be forgotten. Your spirit can be still felt. While there will always be pain here on earth at your going “home”, I know you have a balcony seat next to God…and He is enjoying your giant smile and stories.
We pray for your family strength and peace,,,,You have it already.

My daughter informed me that Kaila’s Uncle passed away while serving in Iraq. We looked up the article and the two of us became very sad. Although we have never meet we send our love and blessing to your family. And want to thank you so much for fighting for us. As I write this I can’t stop the tears from falling down my face just imagining the pain your love ones must be feeling. I hope that they can find comfort in knowing that you are now a soldier in Heaven and that because of your help here on earth gives all of us hope for the future. My God bless you and keep you as well as your family. The Petties-Wilson Family

I am still shocked and speechless to hear of your death. You were one of my first friends when I moved to La jolla, my first boyfriend and we somehow had this connection no one could explain. Like Loxie said, you gave great big hugs and whenever I seemed down, your hug would make all the bad things go away. I miss you making fun of my last name, your laugh, your personality and your warm and comforting vibe you gave when you were present. I regret having the last time seeing you at Sammy’s for lunch all drugged out but I’m clean now (just like you told me to get) and I thank you for caring so much about me & my health. I miss and I love you. Know that you influenced and touched many lives here. RIP Greg.

Greg always made me laugh in high school. He always knew how to make people smile. He also was one of the best Hockey players I ever knew. I am going to miss him so very much. My heart goes out to the family.

It has taken us all week before we could find the keyboard through the tears to write in Shortie’s blog.
I remember, at 2yrs old, Shortie along on the trips to Mexico for the bike rides; even back then he was the life of the party never ceasing to amaze us with his energy and tough guy facade. He loved hanging out in the repair trailer helping “the guys prepare the bikes. On the flip side he would hang out with girls and dazzle us with his infectious smile and charm. Our last trip to San Diego, we sat in the Millard’s living room talking with Shortie, he was so excited about his plans to finish the remainder of his senior year and join the Army to become a Ranger. He shared all his beautifully constructed woodworking projects with us, and my two midwestern (California transplants) children were way impressed with the VW.
Kevin, Jill, Jason and Shortie are the epitome of the word character. They have endured their share of hardships, but somehow always come through every tribulation with a positive spirit and have remained a beautiful family. I ‘m not sure how anyone ever recovers from the loss of their son/bother, but I do know that I am sincerely thankful for the ultimate sacrifice they have and will endure to give us all the freedoms we have in this US of A.
Our world is a better place because Shortie, and the men and women he served with, protect the FREEDOM of the greatest country on the planet.
Let us all remember what it truly means to have the freedoms so many take for granted, and live our lives through the spirit of Shortie
~ Gone but not forgotten ~

Greg-We’ve known eachother since we were in the first grade. You were the boy “next door” and I remember you roller blading to my house all the time when we were kids. We went to elementary school together and when I moved to Arkansas we still kept in touch. When I found out you passed away, my heart sank into my stomach. I went through all of my pictures and found the last picture of you and I together when we were about 16 and I was in San Diego for a few days-I kept it in my pocket all day long and thought about all the memories of us as kids. I just want you and your family to know that I will never forget you. You will always hold a special place in my heart. When we talked right before you went to Iraq, I remember you telling me that you weren’t afraid to die. You are a true Hero, my Hero. I Love you and will miss you.
Kevin and Jill-I’m so sorry for your loss-I pray that God gives you the strength to pull through this devestating time. I really wish I could be out there for the memorial service. I will be praying for you.
